The Shepherd and the Birds Return

Speech given on the occasion of the full Church wedding of Aldo and Fernanda, July 18, 2026, Palmares, Costa Rica, posted here one month later.

HAPPY ONE MONTH ANIVERSARY !!

(A continuación, las versiones en español.)

In January, at wedding #1, I told the story of the Shepherd and the Bird, an analogy that reflects how I, as the Shepherd, have come to know, support, and love the little bird Fernanda as my god-daughter.  It is published on my blog, preceding this one. Here we are today, at wedding #2, and an ending (and a new beginning) of that story follows:

_____________________________________________

The lovebirds returned, this time to the open window of the shepherd’s cabin at the edge of the pasture,  and asked the shepherd “what are the secrets to your long marriage?

"Oh, lovebirds, that is a very deep question. Becky and I have been married for 49 years.  Marriage is a journey following a winding path, where there are always bright summits and narrow, dark valleys, wide open spaces with lovely vistas, and blind corners where you know not what lies ahead."

"But now you are asking what the secrets to our long marriage are? Our long journey?  We offer you the five most important secrets for your journey ahead:

  1. "Talk. Talk more.  Talk truthfully, with integrityTalk to understand each other, your feelings, your thoughts.  Do not bury them within yourself.  Ask questions and avoid assumptions.  And listen.  Listen actively.  Listen deeply. Listen as much to yourself.  There will be times you must say you are sorry.  It's OK.  Forgiveness is a virtue. Gaining a true understanding of each other can only happen with good communication."
  2. "As important is silence. Recognize that you each may need, and should have, your own place of quiet reflection, either together or separately.  You do not need to be together all the time to know, to feel, the love for each other.  Give each other space to pursue what makes you happy as individuals."
  3. "Embrace acts of service toward each other.  Take the initiative to support all household work.  Share duties as equally as possible.  There is no role unique to one of you that the other cannot learn and support. Learn to cook, Aldo!"
  4. "Work through the challenges you are certain to have.  Marriage is hard but rewarding. Always try to exercise patience with each other, with challenges and hardships as they arise, and with life generally.  Most importantly, support each other in both your individual and mutual endeavors, for they are what make each of you a whole person, wanting to live a full life together.  Aldo, you have shown extraordinary patience all these years, awaiting this moment to finally marry Fernanda."
  5. "And finally, laugh together and love being together.  Live, laugh, and love every day.  Love is much more than skin deep, more than a kiss; it is rooted in your heart and your soul.  Find your love language together.  Love is beautiful.  But know this most important secret: . . . love is . . . ice cream!"

"So, love birds, Aldo and Fernanda, go forth on your journey.  Do good work, and in so doing, be happy . . . together . . . deeply in love.  Know that I love you, wish you all the measure of happiness, and thank you for allowing me into your lives, especially on this important, long-awaited day."

¡Aprendé a cocinar, Aldo!"

Many years ago, a shepherd wandered upon a special field, a wonderful place with fertile ground for his flock. Year after year, the flock would nourish themselves on the fine grass while the shepherd watched, sitting peacefully against an old tree.  One year, as he sat there, a small bird flitted among the flock, checking in with each animal before landing on a branch above the shepherd.

“Hello, little bird. What did you see among my flock?” mused the shepherd, certain the bird could not speak.

“Oh, dear shepherd, your flock is fine. They are happy and studious,” answered the bird. “I am more worried about all the other animals in the world, many of whom suffer extreme sadness.”

Astonished that this bird could speak to him in his own language, he replied: “Indeed, little bird, this is true. Not all of my flock are happy. But what can one little bird do for an entire flock?”

“I must study why they are so unhappy, and what can be done to make all of the animals happy.  I shall talk to them. I shall listen to them. I shall hear their plaintive voices to best understand how they can be happy,” she replied.

Now astounded that the little bird could speak, he replied, “Go forth, little bird.  That is a wonderful idea, for I, as a shepherd, want all the animals in my flock, and the flocks of other shepherds, to be happy.”

And with that, the bird parted with a sweet song, headed for distant places to seek her answer.

This went on for many years, as the shepherd always brought his flock to this magical place.  The bird would visit and talk to the shepherd under this tree.  And always the shepherd would ask what her study of the animals revealed.  The little bird would light up and tell the shepherd what she learned.  But one year, the bird said that she needed to go to a special place to study that would certainly provide answers, but it was very far away.

“Here then, little bird, take this small sack of berries in your beak to give you the energy needed to fly to this important place.  It must be done.  We all want a happy flock.”

And so, with gratitude in her big heart, she flew off to study.

Then, after a few years, two birds appeared on the branch.

“Dear shepherd, I have been studying very hard and helping animals whenever I could, thanks to your sack of berries that took me far away to study.  Today, I brought my friend.  We have flown over many pastures to get here.  Why do you come every year to this one pasture?”

“Little birds, I come because the grass for my flock is so fertile. It is well known to me.  I am comfortable here,” he replied.

“Come, dear shepherd.  Leave your flock for just a moment, they will be content in the field, and let us take you to other, magical places.  Places filled with beauty, with majesty, with many wonderful animals.”

And so, for many years, the shepherd would follow these two birds, seeing the places they described, listening to the sounds of nature itself, seeing the grandeur that is this part of the world. And he also took particular note of the fondness the two little birds had for each other, catching moments when their eyes would connect with adoration, when their flight was in perfect synchrony, gliding with the gentle breezes as if dancing. And so, he called them lovebirds.

This year, the shepherd sits in this very place, telling you this marvelous tale of these lovebirds, as he and all the flock here assembled are witnesses to their marriage.  But this shepherd is also a bit wistful, knowing that when he brings his flock back to this magical pasture, these love birds may not be on that branch of the old tree. Rather, they will be together, far away, continuing her mission to help other unhappy animals find peace and, of course, doing so in love with each other.

“Fly onward, Aldo and Fernanda, my little birds, my lovebirds, for it is good work you will do.  It must be done.  Love what you do, and in so doing, love each other in a deep, abiding way. This old shepherd wishes you lifelong happiness.  Thanks for talking to me from that branch, for accepting my sack of berries as you pursued your path, and for letting me into your lives.”

"I love you both."

Hoy traje a mi amigo.

Me siento cómodo aquí respondió.

Venga, querido pastor.

Gracias.
